In it DeBrohun examines how Propertius appears to reinvent his ideal of elegaic poetry in Book 4 by exploring wider, more socially and politically conscious themes. This, the author of this book argues, poses a series of problems for Propertius as it contradicts the very nature of elegy as he defined it in Books 1-3, reflecting two poetic ideals to which he aspires. DeBrohun assess Propertius’ aims and how hw reconciles the thematic and ideological changes from his earlier love elegy.
