In the summer of 1943, World War II is still raging in European nations as well the Pacific Theater. In Charlottesville, teens James Baker, now 16, and his sister Natalia, or “Nat,” live normal wartime lives by attending Jefferson High, working the family farm, experiencing young love, and in James’ case, playing varsity baseball. In the early summer, on old baseball diamonds where new dreams grow, James, Walt Bunker, Herb Jenkowski, and others love playing varsity baseball, and they just keep winning! Zeke Baker, the widower father, secretly desires a wife. He is trying to choose between alluring but secretive Helen LaSalle, and his widowed but attractive sister-in-law, Cora Raleigh. In between friends and dates, Nat meets Ernie Herbert, a handsome young Englishman who may not be what he seems. As the plot thickens, James realizes the questions faced by his father, his sister, his aunt, and his coach. But can James act decisively enough to save Nat, Zeke, and Cora from personal danger?
