The Communist Party of China was founded in Shanghai in July 1921. From humble beginnings it has marched through war, revolution and reform to arrive at the helm of the most populous nation on the planet, commanding a membership of 92 million citizens.
In the 100 years since its birth, the party and its leaders – from Mao Zedong in the early years to Xi Jinping today – have overcome an array of existential challenges. After formative years coordinating workers’ strikes and guerrilla warfare against their Nationalist opponents, the party played a pivotal role in breaking the might of the Imperial Japanese army. The following decades saw the CPC undergo ideological revisions and lift hundreds of millions out of poverty, developing China’s economy from poverty and backwardness into the world’s second largest. The party’s navigation of the deadly coronavirus pandemic marks the most recent chapter in this unique and striking saga of adaptation, survival and rejuvenation.
This new edition is the latest in a series last translated to English in 1994.

Biographical note:
Haiwang Yuan is Professor Emeritus at Western Kentucky University in the US, and Guest Professor of English at Nankai University, China. He is a writer, translator and translation consultant. He has authored and co-authored many books, including Tibetan Folktales, Tales from the Other Peoples of China, The Magic Lotus Lantern, Other Tales from the Han Chinese and This is China: The First 5,000 Years. Among two dozen of his translations are Songs from the Forest, There is a Fish in the Desert, Open-Air Cinema and Illustrated Stories of Chinese Characters for Children. He has consulted on the translation of two Sinoist Books titles. Dr Martin Ward graduated from the University of Leeds (1999) with a BA in Chinese and Japanese Studies, gaining his M.Ed. (2003) and PhD (2006) in Asian Culture from Hiroshima University as a Monbusho Scholar. He is currently working as a lecturer in Chinese and Japanese Translation at the University of Leeds where he founded the now expansive East Asian Translation Pedagogy Advance (EATPA) network, and is also the joint chief editor of the Language Scholar journal hosted by the Centre for Excellence in Language Teaching at the University of Leeds. James Trapp has published China-related books on language, astrology, science and technology. As well as new versions of the Art of War and Daodejing, his translations include Shadow of the Hunter and Longevity Park. Much of his work revolves around integrating the study of Chinese language and culture, and breaking down barriers of cultural misunderstanding that still persist.
